Marc Zimetbaum was born in Newark, New Jersey. He attended Pratt Institute for three years, before leaving with a small group of disgruntled students and faculty to found the New York Studio School. He studied with George Spaventa, Mercedes Matter, Esteban Vicente, and Leland Bell. Primarily a figure sculptor, he started creating cut-outs, which he calls “two-dimensional sculpture,” in the mid 1980s. Over the course of his career, he has received grants from the Rothko Foundation, the COAHSI, NY Foundation for the Arts, and the Harriet and Esteban Vicente Trust. Each summer he teaches figure sculpture at the Chautauqua Institution.
