Ghost Ship
Photograph, 2017, 17 ¼” x 11 ½”

Framing by the artist

Bill Higgins is a native Staten Islander and is a largely self-taught fine art, commercial, and medical photographer.  Higgins graduated from Richmond College in 1976 where he majored in art history and film making.  He has exhibited his work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Staten Island Museum, where he received the Weissglass Purchase Prize.  For nearly 40 years, Bill has been a medical photographer with Staten Island University Hospital.  His medical photographs have been published in foreign and domestic medical journals, and he received the University Hospice Award.  His fine artworks are in many national and international collections.  Higgins kept a studio at Snug Harbor for many years and the location influenced his work and his approach to photography.  He grew up on a houseboat moored in the Fresh Kills, and his work often has a maritime theme.  Higgins took the photographs of John A. Noble that were featured in Noble’s last interview with the museum’s founder, Erin Urban.  In his leisure time, Bill is a classical music patron of Princeton University, the theater, and a supporter of many new and established artists and poets.
