CASA Projects

Every spring since 2008, the Noble Maritime Collection has partnered with PS 373 on the annual Cultural After-school Adventures (CASA) program. The museum's teaching artists have worked with the students to create maritime-themed exhibitions that are displayed at the school and in virtual galleries. Here are examples of the projects we have completed
over the last five years.

Views and Blues of the Waterfront: CASA 2017

Students used the museum's printing press to create views from the shore, and worked with musician Patrick Raftery who taught them upbeat sea shanties and blues-inspired laments about life at sea.

City Pop: CASA 2018

Students visited the Atlantic Salt Co Inc. and, under the direction of artist Lindsey Milazzo, painted a pop art mural of New York City from the shipyard's perspective, on the second floor of their school.

The Randall Project: CASA 2019

PS 373 is the Robert Richard Randall school, named after the founder of Sailors' Snug Harbor. Students learned about him and stenciled pop art-inspired images of his statue on the third floor wall at school, along with images of former Robbins Reef Lighthouse keeper Kate Walker.

Patterns of the Sea: CASA 2020

Students learned the story of the Crab who Cried Shark and created art based on the patterns they read about, such as waves, fishnet, scales, and roping. The project was led by artist Mona Oman and culminated in a virtual gallery of the students' work.

Waves of Inspiration: CASA 2021

Students from the Main site of PS 373, plus two of its North Shore satellite locations at Petrides and IS 61, contributed art based on maritime industry workers and ships in the harbor. The art was printed on vinyl banners and displayed as a public art fence show for the summer of 2021.
