Anton Seder (1850-1916)
Naturalistische Decorations - from Neue Malereien
Color lithograph, c. 1910, 15 ¾” x 9 5/8”
Donated by Lewis V. Chapman

Anton Seder (1850-1916) was an Art Nouveau designer, painter, sculptor, architect, an art professor, and the director of the Kunstgewerbeschule, an arts and crafts school in Strasbourg, France.  He was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany before becoming a teacher of architecture at the Technikum vocational school in Winterthur, Switzerland in 1878.  In 1889, Seder was appointed director of the new arts school in Strasbourg where he worked for decades.  As director of the Kunstgewerbeschule, he was a leading representative of the growing Art Nouveau movement and an innovative educator that emphasized workshop experiences over classroom ones. Seder’s intricate designs evoke nature’s color and lines to facilitate fantastical worlds and imagery characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. Between 1882 and 1903 he published ten books on drawing and painting and acted as co-editor at the professional journal Das Kunstgewerbe in Elass-Lothringen.
