Carey Boone Nelson (1923-2021) graduated pre-med from Wellesley College and went on to earn an M.S. in Education from Wagner College, where she was later honored with a Woman of Achievement award. She also trained in sculpture under noted artists including Arthur Lorenzani, John Hovannes, and John Terken. Early in her career at Massachusetts General Hospital, she contributed to research that helped develop the Pap smear, advancing women’s health. As a sculptor, Nelson became known for her bronze works created through the lost-wax process, portraying figures such as James Madison, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Igor Stravinsky, and Cesar Chavez. Her commissions included monuments for the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Air Force, and the Missouri State Capitol, and her art is displayed on every continent. She received numerous honors for her contributions to the arts, including the Coast Guard Art Program George Gray Medal, and served as President of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club.
