Merfolk in New York Harbor

A collaborative project between the Noble Maritime Collection and PS 373R Mixed media mural on plaster ~ Spring, 2018 Lindsey Milazzo, artist with PS 373R students City Pop is a mural of New York Harbor from the perspective of the Atlantic Salt Company at 561 Richmond Terrace. The students used pencils and crayons to color Robbins Reef Lighthouse, the container ships, tugboats, and construction vehicles at the facility on a backdrop Ms. Milazzo created. Portraits of the students are interspersed throughout the mural, depicting them as ship and waterfront workers. Special thanks to: Principal Paulette Benevento and Assistant Principal Antonio Vestano Brian DeForest and Diana Banjany from Atlantic Salt for arranging the site visit that inspired the project. Mermaids and merboys have found their way into New York Harbor! This video will show students how to make simple merfolk out of a clothespin, foam, and yarn. Feel free to color in tee-shirts on your merpeople, give them a fun hairstyle, and personalize them any way you like!

The Kraken in the Kill Van Kull

The legendary octopus got caught in a big wave that swept him into the Kill Van Kull. Happily, he is friendly and waving to the crew on container ships and the ferry as they pass by. Perhaps one of the ships will give him a ride back to the ocean! This video will show students how to trace a boat onto a map and add the octopus to the scene.
