Join us on July 24 at 11 AM for a special airing of Ferry Boat, a pre-recorded reading by children’s book author Michael Garland in collaboration with the Friends of the Olmsted-Beil House. This program was originally presented for the students at PS 59 The Harbor View School in June. Mr. Garland will read from his new book Ferry Boat, a beautifully illustrated children’s story about the Staten Island Ferry. Scenes from the book include digital etchings of the Manhattan skyline, the escalator to the gangplank, New York City crowds, and landmarks such as Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The book was written with early readers in mind, but its artful depiction of commuters and tourists on the iconic ferry of New York Harbor is also enjoyable for children of all ages.
This program will air on the museum’s Facebook page or here on the website. You can also view the program on the Friends of the Olmstead Beil House Facebook page.
Michael Garland has written and illustrated many books for children including Ferry Boat, Fish Had a Wish (Kirkus Reviews Top 25 Children's Books), Tugboat (Best Children's Books for Family Literacy), Pizza Mouse (Junior Library Guild Selection), and Birds Make Nests (Correll Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Informational Text, and NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book). His art for James Patterson's Santa Kid inspired Saks Fifth Avenue's Christmas holiday windows.
