Native American Whalemen and the World

Join us on Saturday, May 7 at 2 PM at the museum for Staten Island OutLOUD’s free event exploring the poetry of Joy Harjo.  Harjo was the first Native American writer to be honored as US Poet Laureate.  The program will also include readings from “Native American Whalemen and the World”, a history by Nancy Shoemaker.

The program will include a presentation by investigative journalist Stephanie Woodward, who has written extensively on Native American society and culture, and photos by Staten Islander Joseph Zummo who chronicles life in Native American communities.

This event is part of Staten Island OutLOUD’s celebration of Joy Harjo for the National Endowment for the Arts - The Big Read.  The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with Arts Midwest.
