Lecture: Life on the Arthur Kill

  • Noble Maritime Collectiom 1000 Richmond Terrace, Building D Staten Island, NY, 10301 United States (map)

Proposed bridge across the Arthur Kill, c. 1886

Join us on Sunday, February 26 at 2 PM at the museum for Life on the Arthur Kill, a lecture by historian Patricia Salmon. This lecture will explore this fascinating body of water and how it has been used by countless people from Old Place to Travis to Rossville to Tottenville.  The Arthur Kill straight has been an active waterway for hundreds of years. It was utilized by the Lenape, and its resources were equally appreciated by the Europeans who arrived on Staten Island during the 17th century. The Arthur Kill has been the site for Revolutionary War activity, prominent families and their estates, ferries and ferry houses, thriving villages, industry, and more.

The Noble Maritime Collection's public programs are supported, in part, with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council; the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature; and grants from the Lily Auchincloss Foundation and the Investors Foundation.
