Join us on Saturday, February 21 at 1 PM for a book launch and discussion featuring Pat Salmon's latest book, Staten Island & The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge: Chaos Comes to a Community. With the opening of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in 1964, Staten Island was changed forever. Sewers, schools, roadways, and borough natives were not prepared for the transformation that was at hand. Houses were built and bought quickly. Schools scrambled to find seats for thousands of arriving students. The antiquated sewer system could not handle the overload and there simply wasn't enough room for all of the septic tanks needed. Who were the allies or adversaries of development? Who sought to make a meaningful plan for the future? Patricia Salmon examines the preparation, design, and opening of "The Bridge," and its immediate impact on the citizens of Staten Island.
Books will be for sale at $24.99 plus tax. Please arrive 10 minutes before the start of the program.
