City Pop: Skyline & Harbor

July 17, 2018 by Michael McWeeney in Education Programs

The staff of the Noble Maritime Collection designed the City Pop residency program for special education students at PS 373R in grades 4 and 5. Our teaching artists visited the students weekly. The sessions prepared them to create a mural, as a permanent exhibition, in the hallway of the school’s second floor. The school’s faculty and students see it daily as they pass by on their way to offices and classrooms. It is a colorful depiction of the community in which the students live and attend school, and will serve as a lasting benefit of this year’s CASA program.

The Cultural After-School Adventure (CASA) program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and District 49 councilwoman Debi Rose.

A collaborative project between the Noble Maritime Collection and PS 373R Mixed media mural on plaster ~ Spring, 2018 Lindsey Milazzo, artist with PS 373R students City Pop is a mural of New York Harbor from the perspective of the Atlantic Salt Company at 561 Richmond Terrace. The students used pencils and crayons to color Robbins Reef Lighthouse, the container ships, tugboats, and construction vehicles at the facility on a backdrop Ms. Milazzo created. Portraits of the students are interspersed throughout the mural, depicting them as ship and waterfront workers. Special thanks to: Principal Paulette Benevento and Assistant Principal Antonio Vestano Brian DeForest and Diana Banjany from Atlantic Salt for arranging the site visit that inspired the project. Project Coordinators: The Noble Maritime Collection’s Director of Programs Dawn Daniels and PS 373’s art teacher Elena Seminara. Classroom paraprofessionals, Blaise Mejewski, Nicole Fusco, Leah Lee, Melinda Marziliano, and Darleen Rizzo, for their caring support throughout this program.
